To influence, you need to participate and there is nothing in between. Participation and influence are so intertwined. The truth remains that you cannot stay across the other side of the fence and expect benefits accruable from the another side. You need to cross the fence and proactively participate in order to exert influence.
Participation will enable you to have a firsthand grasp of the terrain or the environment. It makes it possible for you to get to know the key players in the field and possible connect with them. When you participate you will become aware of the rules of the game and perhaps play by the rules. Indeed, it will enable you acquire the knowledge, skills, techniques and experience needed to survive and thrive. No participation is like winning a championship without participating in the game. Off course, that’s not possible. To win or exert influence, you got to participate, not just participation but a proactive one.
We are living in a digital world, whereby everything is one way or the other connected to the internet. As a matter of fact, to reap the benefits obtainable from the connected brought about through the digital world, you need to proactively participate. One of the questions people always ask is how they can participate? The good news is that it is not so hard.
How can you participate?
Participation has never been so easy like today with the influx of so many digital devices including laptops, mobile devices and smartphones, making it possible to you to participate anywhere you find yourself in the world. First and foremost, you need to be a regular user of the internet. Like I said before, the internet is like a livewire powering the internet and the social web. You need to be able to use it as you search for information like news, for sharing and exchange of information, for connecting with friends and family through email, instant messengers and so on. As a matter of fact, you need to change your status from internet user to internet dependent user.
Also, you need to register and become active in one or two social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest and so many others alike. It’s not enough to have accounts in a couple of social media platforms, where once in a while you view, comment or like other peoples posts. You have to go beyond that by becoming opinion leaders or influencers. You can do this through posting your thoughts and opinions in form of texts, pictures, videos, presentations, reviews and so on, at the same time generating feedbacks from other people.
You don’t influence by posting garbage
The social media is flooded with lots of garbage. Here you will find countless contents or post with little or no value. People post cheap lies or gossips, fake news, propaganda, nudity with little or no useful value. Though you may see numerous reaction in form of comments, likes and views, however, posts like this may attract lots of followers to the author, but diminishes the person’s credibility, authority and influence.
To gain influence, you have to set yourself out of the crowd by posting original, credible, useful and valuable contents. This will not only make you an authority, but will give you influence. Whenever you make a post, people will be anxious to view, read, comment, like or share your posts.
Influence has rewards
Nevertheless, you can take advantage of your influence for your own gains as you can leverage on it to market and sell almost anything online. Whether it is books, software, services, clothes, your influence can do magic. You may not necessarily have to sell your own products, you can as well make referrals to other people’s products and get commission in return. Beside financial gains, you can give recommendations to your followers that will guide them in making the best choices, whatever those choices may be. However, to remain on top of the game, you need consistency.
Consistency, the key to influence
To succeed, you need a very high degree of consistency. Consistency is what separates the best from others. If you want to have a great body, you need to be consistent in exercising and eating healthy food. A great business enterprise is consistent in providing excellent products and services to its customers or clients. In the same manner, if you want to become and remain influential in the digital world, you have to be consistent in what you post and how often you post. If your posts are relationship oriented, remain consistent in that area. It’s weird when your fans get contradictory and inconsistent posts from you. Today you post about relationship, the next day, you post about sports, the other day, you post about business. You have to establish yourself as an expert in a given area and focus on that area.
Influence is not a title
Mind you, influence is not a title. You may be influential today, and the next day you lose your influence. One of the fastest ways to lose influence is through irregularities in the manner you post. You don’t necessarily need to be posting every day. It’s up to you to decide how frequent you post. It can be daily, weekly, monthly. Whichever way you want to do it, don’t bore your audience with so many posts and don’t keep them waiting for so long before you post.
What really matters are the quality of your posts and not the frequency. Whatever you may wish to share with your audience, make sure it’s something that will add value to their lives.
